Brennan Wedl w/ Comet + Superswell

Brennan Wedl headlines The Broadway with Comet and Superswell!

Brennan Wedl

Brennan Wedl documents those dizzying years spent in the world of ‘twenty-something’. Her radically unvarnished accounts detail an expansive universe that interweaves the everyday with scenes that might include catholic church camps, queer awakenings, one-night stands, or collapsed ‘forever’ relationships. The result? An eminently relatable catalog of moments when profound realizations arrive unexpectedly.

While she has been steadily releasing poignant dispatches as a solo artist since 2016, in 2024 she takes a striking step forward with a new series of singles that will be released via Kill Rock Stars. These recordings capture Wedl at her most unbounded and creatively impulsive; delivering sweetly lilting country one minute, and crashing rock the next, ringing out with jangling brightness at times and introspective in hushed acoustic guitar picking elsewhere.

This impulsiveness is something that Wedl wrestles with daily. Much of her material is indirectly inspired by her quest to live cleanly after the realization that she couldn’t live the life she wanted when drugs and alcohol were involved. However, in a move that is definitive of her approach, she explodes this specific experience into an allegory of life at large. Central is her tug of war between moderation and hedonism. A battle that she may, in any instant, apply to intoxicants, relationships, spirituality, sexual liberty, and beyond. The bubbling undercurrent throughout is a commitment to find comfort in restraint.

Wedl’s knack for encapsulating the moment has been apparent since co-founding the teen Boston band Dazey & The Scouts in 2017 and through their viral resurgence in 2020 as a new audience found themselves drawn to the allure of their self-described “hormonal freak show”. As she heads into 2024 her newest compositions prove that she remains viscerally attached to her emotional core and an acutely gifted narrator of life’s highs and lows.

Comet

Comet is a nu-grunge/post punk musician based in New York City. Her underground hit EP "Two-Winged'' is full of whispers that turn to screams, walls of guitars and otherworldly high ends that will make your spine shiver and heart ache. Comet's lyrical prowess offers new insight into our dark cruel world from a feminine gaze; backed by her band she is ready to take on this world and the next

Superswell

Formed in 2022, Superswell made a strong impression with its energetic performances in NYC and the DIY college scene in upstate NY. The band comprises frontman Dan Avedis Masotti, drummer Harrison Kravis, guitarist Robbie Woll, and bassist Desmond Smith.  In 2023, the band released its first singles, showcasing a fun alternative rock sound.  Later this year, they will release their debut EP and share their dark, heavy side.  It is engineered by Brian DiMeglio (Superbloom, Stay Inside, Gluehead) and mastered by Grammy nominated Will Yip (PÆRISH, Title Fight, Turnstile).

O. Wake headline The Broadway with support from Endearments + hiFi

7:00PM Doors // 8:00PM Show

O. Wake

O. Wake is a band from NYC who's probing songwriting combines elements of art pop and indie rock to explore the anxieties and absurdities of today's world through witty vignettes and sweeping soundscapes. Started in 2019 by songwriter and multimedia artist, Ofer Shouval, the 5-piece outfit transfixes and delights audiences with a genre-bending live set featuring guest performances from deranged AI chatbots, poets, mysterious orbs, and a diy motion-controlled lighting device called a Luminin. Strip all that tech away though, and O. Wake is a deeply emotional band with an intensity and lyricism that will take you for a hell of a ride. Come out and hop on.

Endearments

Kevin Marksson wears his heart on his sleeve. Never one to shy away from big emotions, the Brooklyn songwriter has poured three years of diaries into the music of Endearments. The trio’s latest EP, It Can Be Like This, is no exception; Marksson and his bandmates—guitarist Anjali Nair and drummer Will Haywood Smith—channel these introspections into lush, reverb-washed pop songs that evoke early 4AD dream pop and the romanticism of Roxy Music.

Decent Criminal headline The Broadway with support from The Dracu-Las, Bummer Camp and Wifey!

Decent Criminal

Consisting of core members, brother’s Tristan (singer/guitarist) and Hunter Martinez (drummer), Decent Criminal started out of the roots of Hunter’s previous project of the same name. Of which serves as tribute to their cousin serving a life sentence on insufficient evidence. Mending their sound through local punk and indie influences early on, the band relocated to Long Beach in the fall of 2016 following the release of their debut album. The debut marked by being the bands first album with Tristan as the primary song writer. The bands other guitarist, Brian Gellman, began writing and singing songs alongside Tristan for the bands follow up 2017 album ‘Bloom’. With bassist Jesse Hernandez taking original bassist’ Alex Kouninos place in later 2017, the band began touring more frequently, expanding touring to Europe following the release of their next album ‘Bliss’. Now based in Los Angeles, Decent Criminal spent 2023 touring in support of their album ‘There’s More To It Than Climbing”.

The Dracu-Las

The Dracu-Las are a four piece rock n roll band based in Jersey City and Brooklyn. Formed in the fall of 2021 with diversified sounds of garage and punk with surf, psych, and 60’s girl group elements. Their first vinyl record, ”Fall Asleep When I’m Dead,” is out April 4th.

Bummer Camp

Bummer Camp serve up disarmingly melodic grunge-gaze that cuts straight to the heart.

Originally forged as a solo loop project from NYC scene mainstay Eli Frank, the band has grown through two EP releases into a dynamic 4-piece. Work is currently underway on the first Bummer Camp full-length.

Wifey

Wifey is a Brooklyn power-pop band formed by Teddy Grey and Carly Kerr, two hot dorks who prove that the theater-kid to punk-rocker pipeline is still claiming innocent victims. After working together on an R-rated Garfield musical (don’t ask), the two bonded over a mutual love of bubblegrunge, emo, and DIY, and began crafting the catchiest songs ever written. They were soon joined in marriage by Mickey Blurr on lead guitar, and Chris Canieso on drums, and the rest is history. The honeymoon phase never has to end with Wifey, thanks to their earworm hooks, enticingly questionable lyrics, and lovely harmonies that could only come from the happiest of marriages. Matrimony never looked so good.

Rat Motel headline The Broadway with support from partygirl, This Holy Rodeo and Uncle Skunk

7:00PM Doors // 7:45PM Show

Rat Motel

The Rat Motel first appeared in 2016 as a collective dream sustained by brothers Seth and Clayton Peacock. After a speedy and unanimous decision to drop the undeniably pretentious article “The,” Rat Motel quickly became a staple of the Columbus, Ohio DIY scene with their massive dual-cylinder live sets and infectious buzz rock recordings. They have since half-relocated to Brooklyn but still host RATFEST annually in Columbus. Fan favorite “Dog” is featured in the film “Poser” (released last summer out of Oscilloscope Labs) and their debut studio album “The Rat Motel” (the “The” had to come back somehow) was released in summer 2023. It’s a dizzying peek into a tangled underworld of stories and dreams, using the blunt force of their live show to graft intricately satisfying songwriting onto carefully orchestrated darkness that would make Nick Cave proud.

Partygirl

partygirl is an imaginative, maximalist, feminist rock band based in Brooklyn. The band is formed by Pagona Kytzidis (songwriting/lead vocals/rhythm guitar/keyboards), Francesca Pastore (production/lead guitar), Claire Lin Jenkins (orchestral arrangements/violin/backing vocals), Jonathan Ashley (drums/percussion), Andrew Jordan (bass), and Jenna Love (alto saxophone).

Through creating unique and forward-looking music, partygirl centers intentional and creative storytelling through progressive, genre-bending song composition and lyrics that combine feminist praxis, emotional rawness, and dark comedy. Since early 2023, the band’s energetic and emotional shows have stormed the stages of venues across in New York City and the Northeast, including Baby’s All Right, the Sultan Room, Brooklyn Made, Union Pool, and Mercury Lounge, to name a few. Their highly-anticipated debut full-length project, I’m So Charming, I Forgot Who I Was, is set to release in Fall 2024.

Powerwasher

Blasting onto the punk scene at 3000 PSI, high energy rippers Power Washer are peeling the paint off with their latest DIY contribution Everyone Laughs. With this addition, these Baltimore punks have expanded their sound beyond their post-punk roots, pulling in more shoegaze-like texture, heavier early post-rock riffs, and 80’s New York No Wave skronk- delivering their fans a jaw-dropping and explosive artifact. While heavier and more experimentally elastic, the group manages to retain their knack for catchy hooks and memorable riffing. The lyrics are dense, thought provoking and abstract, reading like the ramblings of a manic artist working through intense catharsis, and delivered in many fashions- chaotic and spastic yelling, dialed spoken word, and melodically sung choruses. “Same Time / Same Channel” Could be a college radio hit, while “1-900-POWERWASHER” feels like a demented homage to James Chance. These run the gamut. This record is plotted and composed with a clear and meticulous art-punk vision. Powerwasher bare their teeth with Everyone Laughs- an undoubtedly provocative, innovative, and replayable rock n roll pipe bomb.

Diet Lite

“Don’t let the name fool you, I can only describe Diet Lite as immense, and that’s an understatement. These cats are the dark matter of midwestern rock. It was the rowdiest music I’ve ever heard come out of a three piece band.” -Aaron Pylinksi (Chicago Crowd Surfer)

Showcasing an eclectic garage rock style combining elements of everything from post-punk to alt-country, Milwaukee’s Diet Lite specialize in blending searing riffs, clever songwriting, and a brand of energy that could be canned and sold. It’s gritty, feel-good rock ‘n’ roll at its finest.

Diet Lite have found themselves at the forefront of a burgeoning young Midwest DIY scene that continues to gain momentum. Over the years the band has become a musical force to be reckoned with, playing hundreds of shows across the country, packing out grimey basements and storied clubs alike along the way. Diet Lite’s most recent LP, Into The Pudding, captures the essence of the high-octane, no-holds-barred live show and unrelenting verve the band has come to be known for.

Pamphlets

Pamphlets are a post-punk band based in Brooklyn, NY. With songs that attempt to speak about the chaos, uncertainty and anxiety of our current moment, Pamphlets position themselves as an unabashedly political call to action.

Clarko

Welcome to CLARKO! Conceived in the desert of Reno, NV, CLARKO is the musical ego trip of Clark “Rules” Demeritt. The LP “Welcome to CLARKO” on Iron Lung Records mixes new wave’s greatest misses with modern punk to create an arms-wide invitation to the double-mad anxious world of smart-mouthed subversion, man-made aneurysms, knee-jerk antagonism, and juvenile gambling addictions. In short, a delight for the senseless. Clark’s mom will tell you in any happenstance meeting at the grocery store, “Clark likes Devo,” and he lives up to his mother’s promise. Sorry State Records says, “It’s weird as hell… it has the aesthetic trappings of egg punk, but the songs are very intricate and musical… parts remind me of the residents. Who’s weird enough to step to this?” At the heart of CLARKO is the distillation of a person, so if you don’t like Clark, you won’t like CLARKO. But most people adore Clark, so you will too!

—Clark of CLARKO

Pyrex

Erupting onto the New York punk scene, Brooklyn based band Pyrex have made waves after releasing a handful of well-received singles and tapes and touring the US generating significant buzz. At long last, the group is releasing their highly anticipated debut LP "PYREX". The LP delivers driving, scrappy hardcore-leaning post-punk that sounds like a mix between a lost KBD artifact and an Eastern European post-punk unknown. This LP explores dystopic and nihilistic themes both lyrically and musically packaged in no-brainer high energy punk. Pyrex delivers distorted, angular and heavily entwined bass and guitar hooks strengthened by linear, pummeling drums with raw, aggressive vocals. The trio have created an LP that is equally unchained and artful. "PYREX" is a wholly well-crafted, frenetic, dialed-in, oven-safe, microwavable, and collectable modern punk record with infinite playability. - Sims Hardin

Blind Equation

Having grown up in the infamous 2010's Chicago area metal and hardcore scene, and over a decade existing in the furthest corners of the internet's niche cyber music communities, Blind Equation is the naturally selected herald of some the world wide web's so-called "weirdest" sounds. Standing on decades of underground and outsider sonic history, Blind Equation is the pinnacle evolution of the, until recently, obscure genres, nintendocore and cybergrind that were birthed in the Myspace era of the early '00's. 90's grindcore, Gen Z hyperpop, and Castlevania-esque video game soundtracks collide at blurring speeds under the keyboard of Blind Equation, and the subsequent amalgamation of otherwise completely incompatible styles is utterly heavenly (though, admittedly, jarring upon first listen). This deliciously digital sonic soup is comprised of the completely maximized forms of its influences and audible ingredients. The blasts: blistering, the vocals: scathing, the synths: from dirge-y dungeon depths to bombastic boss battles. The drum sequences are all around infectious and carry songs at an adventurous pace while expertly composed synths paint the perfect background for vocals that range anywhere from violent screams to effected digicore and hyperpop laden choruses. Blind Equation stands to usher in a whole new era of internet and cyber music. It's the artist you never knew you needed, but now that you've had a taste, simply cannot get enough of. -Natty Gray, Cult Love

Ultra Deluxe

Part screamo, part chiptune, overtly 8-bit, and always aggressive, Ultra Deluxe displays a wide variety of instrumentation. The anticipated synthesizers give way to harmonica, distortion and orchestra strings dance in a noise punk ode to Nintendo. A dark yet uplifting tone defined by driving bass lines and screams that echo the struggles of the proletariat.

Wifey

Wifey is a Brooklyn power-pop band formed by Teddy Grey and Carly Kerr, two hot dorks who prove that the theater-kid to punk-rocker pipeline is still claiming innocent victims. Sex Mex

Sex Mex is the music of Clark Gray. It was started in 2021 with the idea of doing as much as possible with as few people as possible. It’s easy enough to multitrack everything, but making a band sound good live with hardly anybody on stage can be quite the challenge. However, this approach has made it to where Sex Mex can operate in a DIY fashion with ease. Trial and error have been a constant in Sex Mex. During the first 2 years, things were changing so often that people thought it was a schtick. In reality, it was just a result of experimenting like crazy and trying to find a sound that worked.

Sex Mex is a punk band with some power pop and glam rock thrown into the mix. It is simultaneously catchy and abrasive. They accomplish this with the help of a BOSS-RC3. God bless the BOSS-RC3.

Touring will be ramping up in the following months due to everybody in Sex Mex having the availability to tour and being broke as fuck. Soon to be pulling up in a Honda Accord in a city near you...

Rui Gabriel headlines The Broadway with support from Foyer Red and Kolb

8:00PM Doors // 9:00PM Show

Rui Gabriel

Rui Gabriel’s journey to become one of indie rock's most vibrant and perceptive voices is certainly unconventional. Born in Venezuela and raised in Nicaragua, the now-Indiana-based songwriter spent his 20s in New Orleans and playing in beloved bands like Lawn, where he’s a co-songwriter and co-lead singer with Mac Folger. While that band finds the sweet spot between sing-a-long power pop and bracing post-punk, Gabriel’s solo debut efforts use a lighter palate that combines ethereal pop with ‘80s synth textures, and slacker-rock charm. This is a testament to growing up and Gabriel’s disarming lyrical sensibility.

Foyer Red

Brooklyn’s Foyer Red makes sweet yet abrasive songs that careen into delightfully unexpected places. They bounce between time signatures, boast bass lines and guitar riffs that clang and shimmer, and feature vocals that seamlessly crisscross over each other. Whenever the songs feel like they might dissolve into near-chaos, they’re reined in by earworm hooks and masterful leftfield pop songwriting. It’s organized clamor.

Just a year after the release of his acclaimed LP Tyrannical Vibes, the prolific composer and Brooklyn-based songwriter Michael Kolb is back with another project under his last name, Power of Thought. Where Tyrannical Vibes is a heavily orchestrated labor of love, Power of Thought is an exercise in spontaneity, in working closely with friends to prove that clever songwriting and groovy arrangements make for an achievement in creative power. While Kolb projects are not known for subtlety, Power of Thought has a particularly exciting maximalism, as the live recording process between Kolb and his bandmates yields a fanciful, free-flowing exchange between keys, clarinet, vocals, percussion, and more across six tracks.

Spirit Ghost

Spirit Ghost is the creative moniker of Alex Whitelaw. It was started in 2012 as a bedroom pop project outside of Providence, Rhode Island, as a way to play and write music without having to wait for others to have time to do it. It began slowly and the songs weren't very good at first, but over time the songs became okay! And Alex could convince people to play with him. And then those people would quit, but sometimes they wouldn't! And that is the Spirit Ghost that you have today. It has developed past its humble beginnings into a more fully developed sound that draws upon Alex's wide pool of influences, from garage and surf rock to bossa nova and country. As a result the sound is wholly contemporary while still paying homage to the distinct sounds and tones of the 60's.

Jordy Searcy headlines The Broadway

Jordy Searcy

In 2020, after Jordy Searcy made a name as a homegrown touring act and a landmark songwriter for his generation, he left Nashville behind and hopped into his touring-van-turned-camper and drove to the west coast. The 2022 album Daylight is the sound of that uncertain adventurous time, surfing up and down the west coast, writing songs in remote outdoor locations in solitude for weeks at a time and touring the country with friends.

All of that changed in February 2022 when he met his now-wife, Michel Janse. A previous album titled “UFO” had been written, recorded and scrapped, because jordy found a new direction-The End Of Us.

The End Of Us is an album about endings and beginnings-the end of the adventure a single musician in his 20’s discovering the world and taking risks, and the beginning of building a life with the person you want to spend it with. The end of relentlessly chasing a career in a music city, and the beginning of a quiet creative life in the small beach town of Oceanside, CA where jordy now lives. For his wife Michel, this record also has special meaning-this is her 2nd marriage, and the record explores her story and her healing process.

Enlisting the help of longtime friend and hometown buddy Phillip Vo to write and produce, this record is energetic, California summery, Beatlesy, and fresh organic pop all in one. Relying on craft, inspiration, and fun, “The End Of Us” is a no-skips good time.

“Everyone’s life has little endings, its one of the only things you can rely on. For me, it doesn’t matter what you leave behind when something ends, its what you build going forward. That’s what this album is about-allowing yourself to become a new person, with a new person. I can’t wait for people to hear these songs!”

Emperor X

The brainchild of cosmic lo-fi Florida-born indie folk artist, Chad R. Matheny, Emperor X began his aural assault in the late '90s with the release of his debut, The Joytakers' Rakes/Stars on the Ceiling, Pleasantly Kneeling. Emperor X would go on to build a sizable grassroots audience in the U.S. and Europe through constant touring, quirky promotions that involved burying physical media in geocache sites, and a prolific string of releases including standouts like 2011's Western Teleport and 2017's Oversleepers International.

Matheny's musical interest began with a Casio SK-1 keyboard he was given at the age of nine. After acquiring a Tascam 4-track recorder in his teens, he began to record songs that showed his quirky mix of surreal, offbeat lyrics, haphazard arrangements, and pop sensibilities, eventually resulting in 1998's The Joytakers' Rakes/Stars on the Ceiling, Pleasantly Kneeling. Over the next several years, he worked as a high school science teacher and pursued a physics degree while recording music on the side. With the release of 2004's Tectonic Membrane/Thin Strip on an Edgeless Platform, he decided to devote himself fully to his music. Legally blind since a 1994 car accident, Matheny relied on the Greyhound bus for his touring needs, crisscrossing the country promoting independent releases like 2005's Central Hug/Friend Army/Fractal Dunes and 2009's The Blythe Archives, Vols. 1-2.

While based in Los Angeles, Matheny released his next album, 2011's critically acclaimed Western Teleport, via the Bar/None label, and announced the coordinates for 41 cassettes containing B-sides and early versions of the album's songs which had been buried at different locations throughout the U.S. In 2012, Matheny relocated to Europe, settling in Berlin. During his first tours of Europe, he found the public transit system of train and buses far preferable to that of the U.S. Because of his circumstances, he is known to tour light with a guitar and a backpack full of guitar pedals, which would be heard on his next release, the 2013 concert set, Nineteen Live Recordings, a collection of several years' worth of unusual live performances. Initially intended as an EP, 2014's The Orlando Sentinel was adjusted mere weeks before its release to include nine more tracks of an experimental electronic dance nature, making it a full-length release.

Around this time, Matheny was diagnosed with cancer and underwent an invasive bout of chemotherapy and surgery. While recovering in Berlin, he began writing the material for his next album, 2017's Oversleepers International, on which he discussed his experience with cancer and the European health care system. ~ James Christopher Monger & Timothy Monger, Rovi

Vivien Goldman

“No-One’s More Punk than Vivien Goldman,” pronounced Pitchfork Magazine. In that freewheeling spirit, the boundary-busting Vivien Goldman is a writer, educator, broadcaster -- and a musician who has contributed to The Slits, X-Ray Specs and of course Flying Lizards, too. A Londoner, she has lived in Paris and Jamaica and now resides in New York. Since she started out in the vigorous British rock press of the 1970s, often working with Bob Marley (whom she is accredited with discovering and is the subject of two of her books).

She considers Bob, Fela Kuti, Ornette Coleman and The Slits her mentors and greatest personal influences. Known as a pioneer of music journalism, feminism through music, modern musicology, experimental recording, and most recently for the first time in her long career - the stage, she has stunned New York and beyond with her new very Jamaican-influenced live band.As of late, she has an LP, an EP and a re-press of her hit compilation 'Revenge of the She-Punks' out on vinyl and is currently working on a remix album that includes remixes of her songs from friends Denardo Coleman, Marius DeVries, Jordan Bovell, Joaquin Claussell and more.

David Liebe Hart

Known for his roles on Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job! and other Adult Swim series, David Liebe Hart is an outsider musician, actor, puppeteer, UFOlogist, and train buff. David’s vast and eclectic catalog includes songs about aliens, food, trains, and failed relationships, yielding such cult hits as "Salame," "Father & Son" and "Puberty." Live shows provide an intimate, raw, and wildly unpredictable experience with this fiercely unique artist. Often hilarious, engaging and confusing all at once, the David Liebe Hart show is one-of-a-kind and always memorable.

With Jonah “Th’ Mole” Mociun as gadget-wielding backing musician, Liebe Hart’s performance includes songs, animated visuals, puppetry, storytelling, crowd interaction and more surprises.

Tredici Bacci

New York-based 13-piece ensemble Tredici Bacci was formed by composer Simon Hanes in spring of 2013 as a vehicle to bring his unique musical vision to the stage, and to seduce the ears and minds of the northeast underground music scene. The instrumentation of female vocals, string quartet, horns, accordion and rhythm section is specifically designed to capture the musical qualities of Hanes' initial inspiration - the music of italian films from the 1960s-70s. From giallo to spaghetti-western, Morricone to Rota to Cipriani, Hanes has made it his duty to absorb it all, and allow it to inform his original, very personal compositions.

Since its impetus, Tredici Bacci has played extensively throughout the northeast, performing in bars, galleries, warehouses and concert halls, leaving a trail of Campari bottles, confetti, and whipped cream in their wake. Each performance is a celebration - the audience revels as the band deftly performs is technically demanding and cinematic music. Collaboratins along the way include such musicians as Elysian Fields, Ryan Power, Ruth Garbus, JG Thirlwell, Charlie Looker, Vincenzo Vasi, and underground legend Gary Wilson.

TB has released three records - "The Thirteen Kisses EP" from 2013, "Vai! Vai! Va! (Musica dal filmato originale)”, and “Amore Per Tutti” from 2016. Set for a 2019 release by NNA Tapes, will feature Hanes’ most adventurous compositions and arrangements to date, as well as an augmented 20-piece version of the band.

Brutally chaotic and yet rigorously disciplined, WORLD PEACE's unique brand of low end violence refuses to grant the listener a moment's breath. Making their second full pass around the United States in as many years to promote their newest record "IT IS WRITTEN", this Bay Area based 4 piece is not to be missed.

The Body

The Body is a prolific musical force whose creativity is matched only by the astonishing weight of their sound. Duo Lee Buford and Chip King have established their own musical language that reimagines how rhythm, dynamics, and sonics can shape or dismantle song structure. Over the course of two decades, the duo has consistently challenged assumptions and defied categorization, redefining what it means to be a heavy band. On their new album, The Body are again pushing limits and testing the boundaries of the studio to explore the extremes and microtonality of distortion to find its maximal impact. I’ve Seen All I Need To See is The Body at their most incisively bleak, a towering monolith of noise.

UVTV

UV-TV formed in 2016 with songwriters Rose Vastola and Ian Bernacett. In their earliest days, the band started out making raw, speedy punk songs with the edges softened out by bright melodic sensibilities and faint hints of jangle hiding just beneath the surface. Over the next five years the band released two full length albums and a handful of stand-alone tracks, developing significantly from their earliest demos to the buzzsaw pop of their 2017 debut full length Glass, and achieving an even more evolved sound with 2019’s Happy.

With third album Always Something, UV-TV reach a new plateau, with some of the most intentionally crafted and cleanly rendered songs they’ve delivered so far. The first album to be completely written and recorded since the band’s relocation to New York, and the first since new drummer Ian Rose joined on, Always Something was written and recorded during the intense isolation of early 2020. Day jobs were paused indefinitely and the distractions of everyday life ground to a half, allowing for complete focus on the creative process. While demoing the new material, Vastola and Bernacett pushed their lyrical content to more thoughtful, deliberate places while loosening the grip on their arrangement choices, striking a new balance between control and spontaneity.

Jake McKelvie & The Countertops

Jake McKelvie has traveled the DIY touring circuit in the US for the last decade, carving out a niche for himself as a songwriter and performer. Known for his off-kilter and whimsical "stream of self-consciousness" lyricism and charming stage demeanor, McKelvie keeps audiences rapt whether as a solo performer or with his punk-leaning outfit, The Countertops. This year, in anticipation of the release of a new solo record, he will embark on a tour of the UK.

Annie Blackman

Brooklyn, NY’s Annie Blackman writes lyrics that might enfold multiple perspectives and narrative asides, or double back and counteract themselves, leaving specific interpretation up to the listener. Through comedy, self-criticism, and meta-reflection, Blackman lends dimension to memories of whirlwind crushes and deflated dreams. Called “witty and tongue in cheek” by Uproxx, with FLOOD praising her songs “spun from the raw emotional tendons of real-life scenes,” Blackman is a purveyor of bite-sized time capsules put to the beat of engaging indie folk. “...She’s poised for a breakthrough as one of this year’s most distinctive young singer-songwriters,” echoed Rolling Stone in a 2023 profile. “Her latest release, Bug, is a tightly composed five-song cycle about bad dates and breakups, with verses full of sly humor and bittersweet truths. If you’re a fan of boygenius, Soccer Mommy, or Swift herself, it just might introduce you to a new favorite.”

Eliza Edens

Born and raised in rural Massachusetts and currently living in Brooklyn, NY, Eliza Edens weaves together disparate influences of people and place into her work to create mesmerizing sonic tapestries with guitar and voice. With a love for tinkering with alternate tunings à la Nick Drake, a curious harmonic ear from years of childhood classical piano lessons, and an ever-expanding affinity for words and stories, Edens’ songs build a kaleidoscopic world that documents the parallels between hope and heartbreak. The resulting sound is a diverse palette of guitar-based, experimental folk-rock centered around Edens gently cradled voice and brimming at the edges with pockets of sonic whimsy. Edens is due to release her sophomore album We’ll Become the Flowers on October 14th.

Tuxis Giant (solo)

Tuxis Giant formed in Boston, MA in 2014. Drawing influence from the likes of Bill Callahan, Jason Molina, and Pile, they blend alt-country ethos, art-rock experimentation and evocative storytelling into a sound entirely their own. They’ve released four albums, a handful of EPs and toured extensively throughout the past 10 years. Today, Tuxis Giant’s members are spread between Boston and New York City, and they’re proud to be “locals” in both cities.

Tetchy

Tetchy’s music doesn’t so much create a sound, as it creates a place. A place to radically feel. Somewhere that trauma is laid bare, smashed to pieces and then reconstructed through audacious freedom and unabashed pleasure. Perhaps the defining aspect of the burgeoning Tetchy lore is that vocalist/guitarist Maggie Denning is, “someone who has very big feelings”. From the band’s earliest releases, her songs have been repositories of visceral emotion; from unshakeable heartbreak and soul-crushing grief to delirious joy and brazen lust.

Amongst these highest highs and lowest lows, Tetchy craft a world of whispered hushes that explode into eviscerating screams, and ambient space that gives way to bludgeoning walls of sound. A home to embrace one’s good chaos and to work through bad thoughts.

Crush Fund

Crush Fund are a three piece punk group from Brooklyn New York - Wendy Kya (guitar, vocals, production), Nora Knox (drums, vocals) and July Brown (bass) - with explosive punk rock sound that collides hardcore punk energy with post-genre noise pop production. Taking note from dance-punk beats, hardcore/grunge riffs, and angular indie rock, their shows are a busy tug of war of feminine rage, and queer joy. More simply, as they put it, Crush Fund is “Some fucked up pop songs, from some girls trying not to take themselves so seriously.”

Pretty Bitter

Pretty Bitter is a DC Based indie pop group whose current lineup is composed of Mel Bleker (they / them - lyrics, vocals), Zack Be(he/him - Guitar, Keys, Production), Miriam Tyler (she/they - Bass, vocals), Chris Smith (he/him, Guitar), and Jason Hayes (he/him, Drums). Formed by Tyler and Bleker after the two bonded over shared musical touchpoints like Elliott Smith and Rilo Kiley, they quickly began collaborating with other artists in their local scene; including Be, who became the band’s in-house producer and helped create the material that eventually ended up becoming their 2022 album Hinges.Joined by Hayes on drums in 2021, the band’s current lineup began playing shows in the DC area and developing an audience for their easy to love blend of lush synth pop and emo-adjacent indie rock. The sound of Hinges is impressively glitzy and cinematic for its low budget; while also highlighting the strong undercurrent of emo influence that propels these tight, smartly written pop songs. In their DNA, you can hear a lot of Paramore, a bit of Jenny Lewis and Death Cab, and a healthy coating of Chvrches-esqe synth pop sheen; but it hasn’t taken long for them to start to synthesize those influences into something distinctly Pretty Bitter.

Waldemar

Singer-songwriter Gabe Larson is the artistic gravity behind Waldemar, a heartland indie rock band (think The War on Drugs and The National with a dash of Willie Nelson), based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Waldemar combines soaring vocals and poignant, confessional lyrics against a dense backdrop of sweeping guitar tapestries and synth textures to deliver a sonic freight train of an album. The new record Ruthless is a journeyman musician’s fixation, the renegade harmonies of a blue-collar poet.

Written and recorded over a span of five years, Ruthless is an act of remarkable patience and commitment. For two of those years, Larson spent every moment outside of his job sanding floors, painstakingly transforming a weathered, century-old horse barn on his property into a professional recording studio with his brother and bandmate Nick Larson. The studio is hidden in plain sight, nestled along an alley in Eau Claire’s North Side Hill, blocks away from the old Uniroyal tire factory. The setting is incredibly generative and inspiring. Across the street is an elementary school, complete with the sounds of laughing children at play, and in the industrial buildings nearby, hundreds of laborers maintain the neighborhood’s workaday heritage.

Ruthless is the relentless vision of a musician perfecting a sound. Cascades of guitars, synths and vocals wash over the listener like rivers polishing stone, like grit on grains of wood. But the album also represents a different generative experience: the recent birth of Larson’s daughter, Ruth. In this, the album is a poetic dovetailing of a craftsman musician honing his trade, and his young family begetting new life. In a Midwestern setting that gave rise to so many other American dreams, Ruthless is a testament to the power of struggle, that we are made by what we make.

Labrador

When the going gets tough, Labrador are there to lift you up. On their sophomore album, Hold the Door for Strangers, the tenderly bruised alt-country quintet have crafted a collection of compassionate story songs. Patching together ragged indie rock performances with stately strings and electrified solos, the introspective narrators of the band’s cowboy ballads wear emotional scars like a sheriff’s gold star. Led by Philadelphia-based songwriter Pat King, the album tracks a "a battalion of characters, like a populated novel or some enchanting universe that’s deftly and oddly familiar" (FLOOD Magazine) while reminding you that "the cruelty of the world affects us all, and that good times are just around the bend" (Post-Trash). Upon its release, the album was chosen as a "New & Notable" release at Bandcamp.

Meir Levine

Raised in the Hudson Valley and currently based in Brooklyn, Meir Levine blends his folk rock nostalgia for the 1970’s with a modern indie sensibility. He recorded his upcoming EP with acclaimed engineer D. Shybaby

Brooklyn’s Shybaby is permission to be ridiculous. It is a prying necessity to be loud and alive and felt. It’s trying and failing to love, and it's hopelessly in love. It is very much in the moment, unthought. It’s finding the fun in being unapologetically sad and dramatic – to feel your animal feelings so loud & out loud.

High Waisted

High Waisted’s music is a psychedelic lullaby. A gang of NYC surf rockers with pop sensibilities, feminist ideals and an affliction for rock and roll, they leave a trail of confetti in their wake. They’ve been called NME Magazine’s “Buzz Band to Watch,” declared “The Ultimate Party Band” by GQ and have received praise from Consequence of Sound, Noisey, Nylon Magazine, Billboard, Paste, Audiofemme,UPROXX and The Big Takeover.

They released an interactive video in collaboration with Refinery29, performed a live session at Nylon Magazine, Paste Magazine, and stripped down sets for Sofar Sounds in NYC and Austin. The group spent most of 2016 to 2019 touring, playing festivals like Riot Fest and actively releasing music, They’ve supported acts like Brazilian Girls, Shannon and the Clams, Titus Andronicus, The Donkeys, Har Mar Superstar, The Coathangers, Jessica Hernandez, La Sera, Diarrhea Planet, La Luz, and more.

Dye performed at festivals with The Hold Steady, filmed a Nylon Mag video feature, had sponsorships with Fender, Sennheiser, Comedy Central, and countless fashion brands. She currently DJ’s sold out 2,000 cap venues across the US.

High Waisted wrote a song for NPR's More Perfect with a feature on their podcast, had tracks on a record store day release compilation with Bikini Kill, Lenny Kaye, and Atmosphere, were celebrated by SXSW, completed a headline show at the Hard Rock Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip on live television for SBTV, wrapped their 5th and final sold out High Waisted at Sea (completely self organized) and had a two page spread in the final print edition of The High Times.

Their sophomore record (produced by Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady and mixed by Arun Bali of Saves The Day debuted on May 22, 2020. “Sick of Saying Sorry” promotional effort and touring fell victim to the pandemic.

After a brief comeback in 2022, Dye underwent vocal cord surgery followed by a year of intense rehabilitation. Tours were canceled. Recording projects were shelved. Hopes were diminished. Tears were shed. During Dye’s recovery, they released 3 singles in 2023 with plans for their 3rd album debuting in the summer of 2024. Dye’s voice has healed and has been super charged. Extensive touring is being booked, publicity campaigns are brewing and wild stage antics will be bigger than ever. High Waisted is an old friend, calling you back - they’ve missed you.

Homade

Homade is an all-girl rock band from NYC. Formed in August 2021, they love experimenting with different genres while delivering an engaging and confrontational performance style. Tending towards girly punk, Homade dips into psych-rock and shoegaze, but maintains a playful ambiguity that allows them to shape shift from show to show.

Dead Tooth w/ Big Girl + Edging

Dead Tooth headlines The Broadway with support from Edging and Big Girl!

11:00PM Doors // 11:30PM Music

Big Girl

Big Girl, a New York project conceived by vocalist and guitarist Kaitlin Pelkey, is a fierce and captivating 6-piece rock n' roll band. Big Girl’s music is expansive and cathartic, combining indie-rock vulnerability with irreverent punk energy. Their harmonically adventurous songs are filled with delicious lyrics, and athletic guitar playing, driven by soaring vocals – sometimes a chorus of them.

"The larger than life sextet, led by wild front-woman Kaitlin Pelkey, knows how to command a stage and quite frankly any room they occupy with their wonderfully electric and often times frenetic live sets.” (Full Time Aesthetic) Three singers head the stage with circus-like choreography, and vocals that oscillate between the grave tones of a preacher to the sass of a schoolgirl. Guitars tremble and wail while drums crackle and burst in improvised interludes before seamlessly checking into a groove. The band will sound like Deerhoof one moment, only to take a hairpin turn into the textures of Sleater-Kinney or the intimacy of Phoebe Bridgers.

Edging

The Chicago Art based punks Edging are here to liberate the freaks and weirdos. Live, almost the entire band becomes a rhythm section as Faith Callaway (singer) beats and shakes a tambourine and Tyler Meneese rhythmically honks and blows away on his woodwind. You could say Edging was on the edge of while edging professionally and recreationally. One of Edging’s main hallmarks is Meneese’s wild saxophone playing. It gives the band a very American feel not unlike artists like Downtown Boys or Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. The album titles, Good Sex Music and their newest record, Concrete Cumming, are big vibe indicators. A modern sound requires modern content, and for Faith Callaway and Will Sallee, Edging’s chief lyricists, that means commentary on issues like trauma, misogyny, relentless mental battles and social injustice. In their words, these are “ALL FRUSTRATIONS OF THE CURRENT WORLD,” and it’s time the current world got fucked by an Edging show.
